Inserting a show within a show gives TV writers a chance to take a few shots at themselves for a change, or to take an audacious shot directly at you as a viewer of TV. Or sometimes, it's just a good excuse to use the word "inbreastigator," because it's kind of hard to slip that into dialogue.
